On Saturday, the Franklin Fire Department, tweeted in honor of a fallen comrade.

Please take a moment to remember Firefighter John Durand. Firefighter Durand died in the line of duty while fighting a brush fire off South Street 45 years ago on April 30th, 1977.

Firefighter Durand was 36 years old and a nine-year veteran of the department.

According to contemporary newspaper accounts, Durand had recently undergone a medical examination and was considered to be in good health. However, operating at the site of the fire he was exposed to heavy smoke and the medical examiners at Woonsocket hospital, where the town’s ambulance transported him, determined that the smoke and lack of any protective apparatus for firefighters at the scene, led to his demise.

Fellow firefighters discovered him collapsed across the seat of their truck as they came to unload additional hose.

He was trained as an EMT and was a cardiopulmonary instructor and first aid cochairman of the Franklin Chapter of the American Red Cross and a member of the Elks and Knights of Columbus. He left a wife and three daughters and a son Brian.

Police Groups Allege Open Meeting Law Violations

The new state agency charged with licensing police and holding them accountable has repeatedly violated the state's open meeting law, according a complaint filed Wednesday in Suffolk Superior Court.

The allegations are outlined by three plaintiffs in a complaint against the Massachusetts Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission, or POST Commission. The Massachusetts Coalition of Police, Boston Police Superior Officers Federation, and the Boston Police Detectives Benevolent Society announced the legal action.

The plaintiffs want a court order making null and void "all actions taken based on work product, advice, or recommendations" of commission subcommittees generated in violation of the Open Meeting Law.
